And then Dungeons & Dragons was a way to play with story. “I just understood that I was surrounded by this magical medium, even if I didn’t understand how it worked. Even if I would never DM anyone through those maps, it was fun to create these crazy labyrinths.” (Select to view)īalda lists Ralph Bakshi’s The Lord of the Rings and Ray Harryhausen’s Clash of the Titans among his early influences, although he admits he didn’t know he wanted to be an animator at that young age. “One of my favorite pastimes as a kid was to draw mine and my friends’ D&D characters or dungeon maps. Especially A Paladin in Hell, fighting all the demons, as I was always drawing knights and that kind of thing. But I loved looking through the Player’s Handbook at all the artwork. “I didn’t understand at the time if they were the same game or if they were different games, because one had way more simple rules. To jumpstart those early adventures, his parents actually bought him both the fabled “red box” starter set and a later edition. But the artwork showing all the varied monsters was really an entry point to D&D for me.” Youthful Endevoursīalda played Dungeons & Dragons for three or four years as a boy, before rediscovering the game a little over a year ago. “He was one that always sparked my imagination. That’s the Mount Everest of the most evil deed they could do.”Īlthough he wasn’t the only mind behind their creation, Dragon+ can’t help wondering if the Minions are drawn to darkness because Balda himself used to lean in that direction, as he admits he also had a fascination for the villains in his youth. For them, doing something bad is like slap-fighting or dropping a water balloon on somebody’s head. “They are attracted to what looks powerful and dark but when it comes down to it they’re not able to do much. They just think that’s what they want,” Balda says. “The thing that’s always been ironic about the Minions is that they want to follow a bad guy but there’s nothing evil or bad about them whatsoever. Would they latch onto a worthy scoundrel they think is cool, or go solo and start practicing their own evil deeds? (Select to view) Having watched the Minions travel the globe in search of a villain in their first movie, it’s interesting to wonder how they would fit into the world of D&D. Gru was this gruff, curmudgeonly character and the Minions were there to provide a comedic element as a nice balance to him.” But the more important reason is that they weren’t as much fun as these cute little guys who do stupid things. The first is that it would be really expensive to create all those different characters. “There were two reasons we didn’t go that way. They were these huge monsters with all kinds of armor and battle axes and each one looked different,” director Kyle Balda tells Dragon+. “The original Minions looked much more like orcs when they were being developed. While they were always going to be individually recognizable, their overall look was initially much closer to something you might come across in a tavern in Faerûn. Since then they’ve appeared in two further films with the nefarious Gru (voiced brilliantly by Steve Carrell) and been spun off into their own movie.Īs yellow as the bananas they love to eat, each Minion has its own characteristics and is distinct from its friends. Lovable and mischievous, the Minions were an instant hit with audiences when they were first introduced in the animated adventure, Despicable Me. Minions 2 director Kyle Balda looks at the orc-like history of his bumbling yellow characters and presents D&D versions you can use in your game!

Amonasro tries to kill Amneris but is stopped by Radames. As Amonasro confronts Radames, Ramfis and Amneris emerge from the temple, horrified to hear what Radames has done. As Radames insists that he will marry Aida instead and talks about their future together, he reveals the army’s secrets, much to Amonasro’s delight. Before he arrives, Amonasro appears and forces Aida to extract information from Radames about the location of the Egyptian army. Meanwhile, Aida waits on the banks of the Nile to meet Radames. On the eve of Amneris and Radames’ wedding, Ramfis escorts Amneris to the temple of Iris for a pre-wedding ritual. Radames is offered the kingdom and Amneris’ hand in marriage as the celebrations continue. The Egyptian king complies out of gratitude for Radames efforts in the war, but keeps Amonasro as a captive. Radames, however, requests for their release in an effort to save Aida from death. Their pleas go unheard as they are sentenced to death by the Ramfis and Amneris. Amonasro tells the Egyptians that the Ethiopian king has been killed during the battle and – along with the other captives – begs the king to show mercy. Though Amonasro and Aida are delighted to see each other, they cannot be reunited for fears that they both may be killed. The captured Ethiopians are brought out in front of the Egyptian king Aida sees her father Amonasro – the Ethiopian king – pretending to be a slave so that he is not killed. Upon seeing Aida’s reactions, Amneris realises that Aida is in love with Radames and she becomes consumed with a jealous rage.Īt the celebrations, Radames is welcomed back by Amneris and the King and is rewarded with whatever he wishes. Amneris decides to test Aida’s feelings for Radames by telling her that he has died before revealing the truth. In her chamber, Amneris is preparing for the return of the Army and Radames after they have emerged victorious over Ethiopia. As Aida prays, Ramfis and the priestesses perform sacrificial rituals to ensure victory over Ethiopia. As Radames and the palace celebrate his promotion and prepare for the war with Ethiopia, Aida is torn between her love for Radames, her father, and her home land. Amneris herself is infatuated with Radames but is fuelled with jealousy when she realises his feelings for Aida.Īs news reaches the palace of the Ethiopian’s approach towards Thebes, the Egyptian king appoints Radames as Captain. However, Aida believes that Radames affections are for her mistress, Amneris, the Egyptian King’s daughter. Radames is in love with the Aida, and hopes that his efforts on the battlefield will win her heart. Aida’s royal identity is unknown to the Egyptians as is the fact that the Ethiopian King is invading Egypt for his daughter’s return. However, his aspirations are not just on the battlefield Radames also hopes to free Aida, the Ethiopian king’s daughter who is a slave in the Pharaoh’s palace. Radames, eager to defend his country, has hopes that he will be selected as the Captain of the Egyptian Army. The high priest, Ramfis, explains to a young warrior, Radames that the Ethiopians are planning to war with Egypt very soon. Aida could be a Requiem in Egyptian costumes, as its final bars rise pianissimo, morendo, sempre dolcissimo, as if adorned with a halo, up to the heavens.Aida at the Prague State Opera - Opera House - Tickets - Giuseppe VerdiĪct I begins in the Pharaoh’s grand palace in Memphis, Egypt. They sang of heaven, but the songs were heavenly themselves, and heavenly sung”, wrote Thomas Mann in The Magic Mountain.Ĭonductor Hans von Bülow once rashly described the Messa da Requiem as an “opera in ecclesiastical garb”. The exchange of song between the two, interrupted at times by the muffled sound of the ceremonies taking place above, or harmonising with it, pierced the soul of our solitary night-watcher to its very depth, as much by reason of the circumstances as by its melodic expression. She has been waiting here in order to die with him. Yes, she has found her way to him, the beloved for whose sake he has forfeited both his honour and his life. “Tu in questa tomba?” utters the inexpressibly moving, sweet and at the same time heroic voice of Radames, in mingled horror and rapture… “The Triumphal Scene, with its blaring trumpets and its monumental grandeur, as authentic as contemporary Egyptology and the late 19th century imagination would allow, seals the tacit alliance between religion and the sword: a terrible machine to crush individuals which ultimately buries them alive in a vault. Just kidding. These monster hunts work in a similar way to quest battles for lords you complete a series of tasks on the campaign map and then have to fight a challenging battle. ‘The Monstrous Arcanum’ is a book of legendary monsters that allows you to initiate monster hunts. They track and capture them for use in battle or hunt them for the favour of their gods, so in the campaign there is a mechanic reflecting this. Throgg receives a lower upkeep for Trolls and other monstrous units, whereas Wulfric receives bonuses to Berserkers and his whole army causes fear in battle.įirst and foremost, Norscans are hunters they live in a harsh land filled with Giants, Frost Wyrms, Chaos Mammoths and lots of other horrific mutated creatures. While both Norsca and Wintertooth share these mechanics and a unit roster (of monsters and men) they receive buffs that differentiate their play style. Norscans also pride themselves on their strength and so when confederating another faction, you don’t have to go through the finicky process of diplomacy, simply waste their leader in battle and they’ll join you. Norscans are basically the Vikings of the Warhammer Fantasy world (if the name wasn’t enough of a clue) and to reflect this, your main source of campaign income is raiding and sacking. There are also plenty of mechanics that set Norsca apart from other factions. You can play the field, receiving minor benefits from multiple gods, but sooner or later, you’ve got to choose one and this will trigger a series of end-game events. In doing this you pledge allegiance to a god and receive a special prize, which ranges from a plague that affects all factions but yours, to a mega piece of artillery. The main goal of the campaign is to raze settlements in favour of either The Hound, The Crow, The Eagle or The Serpent (or Khorne, Nurgle, Tzeentch and Slaanesh for you lore fans). The second is Wintertooth, headed by Throgg, King of the Trolls, an especially cunning monster who wants to bring about a new ice age. The first faction is Norsca (appropriately named) headed by Wulfrik the Wanderer, a Tormund Giantsbane look-a-like, cursed by the Chaos gods for being a bit cocky and forced to eternally roam the world on his longship Seafang, hunting champions. The new Norsca consists of 2 playable factions and 6 npc factions. Also as few of the races start/play around Norsca, there’s a whole tract of the map that is barely ever used in campaign. Norsca comprises the northernmost reaches of the campaign map and while they play a reasonably significant part (especially as the Chaos invasion looms closer) their roster was fairly generic and in much need of love. There has been a wealth of content for the first game, but the new Norsca DLC represents the final major content the Old World is likely to receive for quite a while, as we move onto the greener pastures of Total War: Warhammer 2. We started the game with 8 Legendary Lords now there are 29. It’s been a long year for us Total War: Warhammer players we started the game with 4 playable factions, now there are 15. I had some problems finding my bootable USB stick in the boot menu, so I did the following: I downloaded ubuntu 21.10 and I created a bootable USB stick with BalenaEtcher. So after these, I wanted to install Ubuntu. Arguably, the complexity of writing images solved by Etcher gives it a head start when selecting software to use. However handy this software may be, the drawbacks it subjects users to are a clear indication of its potential improvement areas. That said, the Etcher developers are in a constant quest to improve its efficiency, which has resulted in their frequent updates. Verified burning - Contrary to complaints reported before its innovation, Etcher assures its users of proper burning of images.Etcher offers your data security through a process in which it selects a drive, thus ensuring the user doesn't end up with an empty drive. A friendly hard-drive - In using some related software, you run the risk of formatting your drive. The developers are working effectively to see multiple drives written simultaneously. Danielle shares that a huge joy for her is getting to watch the interns develop over the academic year into strong clinicians. As a supervisor and program manager she is passionate about training, supervision and coaching. When she came to CODA in 2012 she noticed that there were not currently MSW interns at her site, and she helped establish that relationship. “Danielle is such an amazing supervisor – the way she poses questions in supervision will often lead to a revelation later or a deeper understanding.”ĭanielle has been involved with the PSU School of Social Work since around 2007, when she was living in Northern California and a host site for MSW interns in the Southern Oregon Distance Option program. Maeve credits Danielle’s commitment to supervision and supporting student learners as one of the reasons she is such an effective supervisor. Danielle was very intentional on centering Maeve’s experience as a student intern in this new role, and how that would be distinct from her previous employee role at CODA. Maeve knew she needed to take a year off of work to focus on graduate school, but one of her first thoughts was “I love my job, I do not want to leave CODA!” Danielle was a wonderful support for her envisioning what an internship at CODA could look like so that Maeve could continue to learn and grow there. Maeve is a graduate of the BSW program at PSU, and was working at CODA as an intake specialist when she got into the Advanced Standing option of the MSW program. Zoie reflected that the interns' work was “really valued and integrated into the whole team”. Not only is this a structured way to help prepare them for practice, but integrates them with full time employees and instills a sense of belonging. Danielle shared that interns are included in required training cohorts for all new employees. Zoie commented that Danielle’s style was the “perfect combination” of encouraging the interns to take on clients when they feel ready, while also providing them with orientation, training and supervision to get there. Zoie was put at ease from the beginning, with incredibly structured onboarding that assisted her in feeling prepared for her internship. Zoie Meyers came to her placement at CODA with experience in community mental health and was unfamiliar with the work of substance abuse treatment programs. Zoie, Maeve and Danielle were generous enough with their time to let me join one of their last group supervision sessions to reflect on the year. Zoie and Maeve are two Advanced year Clinical MSW interns wrapping up their placements at CODA Inc, at the Hillsboro Recovery Outpatient Program, supervised by Danielle Berner, Senior Program Manager. Learning Morse code and passing a test on it has long been a barrier to entry for new hams. Over time, the popularity of morse code - also called simply code or CW - has waned and interest in voice communications - an analog mode as opposed to the on/off digital of CW or RTTY (radio teletype) - has grown. They chat, they invent, they have contests to see how many stations they can contact within a given time frame, and when natural or man-made disasters occur, they are usually the first to establish any kind of communications between the stricken area and the rest of the world.Įarly hams used Morse code sent by CW almost exclusively. Hams communicate by radio, but only on government-allocated frequency bands where they are allowed to operate. The ARRL, which is the national association for amateur radio in the United States, was founded in 1914 and counts 150,000 active members today. There have been amateur radio operators for as long as there has been radio. I’ve included a brief glossary of terms used in this story, but for the inquisitve, here is a link to a more complete reference work explaining ham jargon.Īccording to Wikipedia, there are about 3 million amateur radio operators - or hams - around the world. Here’s the story behind both the rising popularity of “sound card” digital modes in amateur radio and how Fldigi lets you enjoy enjoy them on Linux.Hams use their own jargon, which is just as obscure to non-hams as IRQ, USB, or DDR are to non-computer geeks. Dave Freese has just released version 1.2 of Fldigi, a popular new program for Linux and FreeBSD which enables amateur radio operators to join their radios and their computers at the hip and create a new kind of ham shack: a digital ham shack. Even if you take this step, the menu will stay visible if you disconnect the mouse. Since Assistive Touch is now on, you may see a circular menu that stays on every screen, and which includes shortcuts to features like the Control Center or Siri. You still have to use the comparatively awkward pre-iOS 13.4 method of setting up a mouse on iOS if you want to use one with your iPhone. You can also turn off Apple’s “Natural Scrolling,” which I’ve personally never found natural. There you can change the tracking speed and choose whether the “Secondary Click” (i.e., “right-click”) will be on the right or the left. You can customize your mouse experience by going to Settings > General > Trackpad & Mouse. You’ll know it’s working if you can see the new circular pointer moving around the screen. Your mouse should immediately start working. You might get a “Bluetooth Pairing Request.” If you do, press Pair. You should see your device appear under a header in the Bluetooth interface called Other Devices. If your Magic Mouse 2 is unpaired, you should simply have to turn it off and on again for it to show up. Make sure Bluetooth is toggled on at the top. When you’re ready to pair the device with your iPad, make sure you have Bluetooth turned on, and then set your mouse to pairing mode. On the Mac, you can do this by going to the Settings app on your Mac, pressing Bluetooth, and then right-clicking on your mouse in the list you see. First, make sure the Bluetooth mouse you want to use is unpaired with any Mac or PC. |
